Karl Franzen's playlist of Carolan on Classical Guitar:
I play Irish Harp Music on Guitar in a Folk/Classical style, primarily the works of Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738). It is an elegant, spiritual music made in tribute--much as someone would have a portrait painted, they could also have a piece of music created in their honor with a visit from the traveling bard. This music combines classical elegance with the wistful magical sound of ancient Ireland. Having been largely written for people, each tune has either a masculine or feminine quality. This attribute makes it ideal as music for weddings. Since many people have a little Irsh in them, it can be of cultural interest as well. The "cosmic" quality of Carolan's work, and Celtic based music as a whole, make it quite compatible with most events that take place in a natural surrounding, such as a garden, Renaissance festival, or park. Its gentle quality makes it useful as live music for yoga classes, or as quiet dinner music. The added vocality of a guitar can reflect upon the phrases of music. Since this music has been handed down as a single melody line for harp, all of the guitar interpretations (presently 72) are my own and do from time to time make slight alterations in the melody, or make use of various modernisms, too implied in the music for a modern ear to ignore. Since there are, to date, no recordings of my music available, your event's sound will be unique. 09/22/10
